Book Review : ‘Prophets, Poets and Philosopher - Kings. Sketches on India's Spritual & Literary Heritage’ by Abhijit Basu

'Prophets, Poets & Philosopher – Kings' is truly only a sketch. It is only a glimpse into what India’s spiritual and literary heritage is. As there is to end to what and how so many of the interpretations of the great works of Valmiki, Veda Vyasa, or even Kalidasa are, this particular book attempts, at one such elucidation.

Starting all the way from the one of the greatest rishis of all time, Vishwamitra, who through his concentration and meditation drew out many insights. These were not just stages of human consciousness, but also attempts at have various levels of deeper understanding.

Moving on to Valmiki, who through his power of concentration, brought out the Ramayana, just as Veda Vyasa brought out the Mahabharata. We have been reading both of these for a long time now, and there is no end to their interpretations.

The basis of this particular book is not just one hero or one such person, who drives the story through, but it is many such rishis or philosophers who manage to put them together. Ancient India was definitely a thread of critical and scholarly times, which this book attempts to draw attention to.

Between these stories and the Western philosophy, this particular book seeks to find the resemblance. That is how one can notice that Freud and Jung’s philosophies seem laden with the Bhagavad Gita and Krishna’s version of human psychology.

These theories are not just the ones, but they also include Kalidasa’s literary talent, which bring it to an end. Treating us to the Upanishads and Yudishtira’s philosophies are this book’s highlights. Do read this particular book by Abhijit Basu and understand what exactly his portrayal is in this narrative.
