Book Review : ‘Mightier than the Sword’ by Jeffrey Archer

Mightier than the Sword’ is the fifth part of the Clifton Chronicles. So, we have waited, and the book is back with a bang. Literally, a bang. Everyone is on board the MV Buckingham, which is up for its maiden sail across the Atlantic. But, the IRA is also on the ship, and has placed a bomb on board.

Emma Clifton who is the chairman of Barrington Shipping, is also on board with her entire family. But, luckily for her, her husband, Harry Clifton realises this plot. He manages to chuck it overboard with Emma’s brother, Giles’ help. Emma and her board members decide to tell the press, that it was the Home Fleet, who was carrying out night-time exercises in the Atlantic.

Harry’s plan was to visit his publisher is afoot, while his son, Sebastian plans another one to visit his girlfriend’s father to ask for her hand in marriage. Harry is a supporter of Anatoly Babakov, who is currently in prison. Babakov has written a book, titled ‘Uncle Joe’, which could destroy Stalin’s image.

Harry wants to use his position as the president of English PEN, to have him released. That story takes on a whole new life, as you notice Harry’s visit to Anatoly’s wife and then his visit to Russia.

Meanwhile, Giles also loses out on another relationship with his current wife, and therefore his position in the British government. He was a minister of the Crown. His ex-wife, the vamp of the story, Lady Virginia Fenwick, is still making her best efforts to bring down Emma. Using Alex Fisher in the whole plot, is another story altogether.
Firstly, she tries to find out what exactly took place on MV Buckingham. The story behind the blast, why and how it did not actually give out the big blast aboard the ship. What are the happenings, which takes Emma to court, and what happens toward the end are all plots within the main story.

The best thing about this book is that it does not lose its plot :). It continues from the previous book, and is able to hold its own. The plot thickened and managed to keep me intrigued. Jeffery Archer manages to hold on to the reader, and manages to give it the ultimate twist, which would lead us on into Volume Six.

A good one, definitely better than the earlier three parts. If you remember, I did say I loved the first one and really wished for it to end by the third one. But it did have my interest in the fourth one again.
